About the company

Indus OS is the world’s first regional mobile operating system and commands the 2nd highest market share of the Indian mobile OS market. Its ecosystem in regional languages is helping Indian mobile users come on the internet, discover services and content with ease. It also provides a strong channel for app developers to acquire and engage with hitherto inaccessible customers. The team has built a simple and intuitive product for regional language users who are either upgrading from a feature phone or changing to a smartphone. Deep integration of applications at OS level has enabled increased reach and engagement with a large customer base. With the rise in adoption of smartphones pan – India, Indus OS is enabling smart phone manufacturers to reach the untapped regional market

Why we invested

India’s smartphone market is expanding rapidly, driven by rising affordability, the government’s Make in India initiative, and growing mobile internet penetration. The country is projected to reach over 800 million mobile users by 2019, growing at a CAGR of 5.9%. With only 11% of connections on 3G and 4G in 2015, data penetration is expected to surge to 42% by 2020, making mobile the dominant platform for digital access. However, this massive growth comes with a challenge: the lack of regional language support and digital literacy, preventing millions of Indians from fully benefiting from the digital revolution.

IndusOS addresses this gap by offering a customized Android-based operating system designed specifically for India’s vernacular users. Pre-installed on smartphones from major OEMs like Micromax, Intex, and Celkon, IndusOS provides a simplified interface, real-time translation, and transliteration in local languages. It also offers deeply integrated, localized content and app recommendations, making it easier for first-time digital users to adopt and engage. With features like App Bazaar, IndusOS monetizes through app installs, in-app purchases, and strategic partnerships with companies like Freecharge, Ola, and Saavn.

Founded by a seasoned team, IndusOS has scaled rapidly, becoming India’s second-largest OS with a 5.6% market share and over 4 million users. Its deep tech integrations and focus on vernacular accessibility create a significant entry barrier for competitors.

With its regional-first approach, IndusOS is poised to lead India’s digital inclusion wave and aligns well with our thesis of backing scalable, tech-driven solutions addressing large market gaps.
